$7.00 per month web hosting from MateMedia

Total advertising expenditures in the U.S. jumped in 2003, and the interactive sector led the charge, according to a report by TNS Media Intelligence/CMR.

Overall, ad spend went up 6.1 percent, to $128.3 billion, and the Internet showed the most robust gain of all media, according to TNS Media Intelligence/CMR, a New York-based strategic advertising and marketing information provider.

Marketers may be able to breathe easier thanks to a preliminary ruling by the U.S. Patent and Trade Office saying original HTML specs precede Eolas Technologies' patent for Web page plug-ins, invalidating its patent claims against Microsoft.

The decision has major implications for marketers using plug-ins such as Flash to deliver online ads. If Eolas' patent had been upheld, Microsoft would have had to change its browser. This in turn would mean rich media would have to be re- programmed Net-wide.

Small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) are beginning to buy their way into the paid search market, according to a report from The Kelsey Group and ConStat, but the majority haven't yet recognized the importance of pay-per-click (PPC) pricing. The collaborative study revealed that only a small portion of SMEs are currently involved in PPC, but there is potential for a substantial number to join the ranks over the next year.
